Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Those 10 words changed the world forever. Changed the way man would understand the world he lived in.

Moses inspired by the Holy Ghost, described a God that was radically different than all the gods of the ancient world.

Every tribe or nation back then had its own gods, gods of nature, a different god for everything, a god of the sun, the moon, the harvest, god of war, goddess of beauty, goddess of fertility, gods to sacrifice to and to be worshipped to help with every aspect of life, a different god for everything that affected the lives of the people. *

In India today, one report on the Internet estimates that Hinduism has 33 million gods, to cover every miniscule aspect of creation.

But who created all of those gods?!? Well, man did. But who really created everything?

We have the answer in the first 4 words. In the beginning God …

Before there was time or space or matter, there was God. In the beginning.

Science actually confirms this. Most scientists believe in the Big Bang. The universe had a beginning. And thanks to Einstein and his theory of relativity, we know that time, space, and matter are related. (Actually, some scientists believe that a random fluctuation in a quantum foam triggered the Big Bang. This is the best they can do to once again deny God’s existence. Again, who created the quantum foam? You get the point.)

Science is a good thing. I love science. It gave me my iPhone, my microwave, my hybrid car, my career in computer science, modern medicine that saved my life. I like it a lot.

But science can never explain God. God is not in the realm of science.

God transcends science.

Moses wrote down the way it was long before Einstein figured it out.

Beginning. Heaven. Earth.

Time. Space. Matter.

All in 10 words.

God transcends his creation — time, space and matter. He is not a part of it. God is a spirit. He is invisible. He is not a part of this material universe. He was before this universe, and He will be after this universe. He is everywhere present, because he transcends space, too.

He is timeless, he is everywhere present, he is immaterial.

We live in a cause and effect world. Everything has a cause.

The chain goes back in time to the beginning. A was caused by B, B was caused by C, C was caused by D, etc. etc.

All the way back to the Big Bang. But what caused the Big Bang? God did.

Disclaimer: the Big Bang is a theory. Genesis tells us what God did, not how He did it. If it wasn’t the Big Bang, it was something else. But it was God who created.

Genesis says that God spoke everything into existence. We also know from Genesis that there was a process. Six days of creation, so we know He did it in steps. This is WHAT He did. For the purposes of this article, it really doesn’t matter HOW He did it.

The fact is that our cause and effect world eventually leads back to the original cause, and that cause is God.

He is the uncaused cause. He is eternal. He was not created. He has always been, and always will be.

Science tries to explain it though. The best it can do is either: 1) creation created itself from nothing, or 2) creation always existed.*

Many scientists reject both of these, although the latest theory du jour is string theory and multiverses, the idea that there are an infinite number of big bangs and universes. But who or what created all of those universes and caused all those big bangs?

Science is terrible with beginnings. Not only can it not explain the beginning or cause of the universe, it also can’t explain how life began from inanimate matter. Nor, can it explain how consciousness began from life. Nor, can it explain beauty, love, art, or music. *

Reason and logic can’t explain everything. They are valuable tools of science and philosophy, but they have their limits.

Even science and philosophy must admit or should admit that a creator God, the uncaused cause, is the most reasonable explanation for the existence of everything.

Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, is the Logos, the true reason for everything. By Him was everything created. He is The Truth.

John 1:1-4 — In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

May God Bless You
